3. Herculaneum
This ancient Roman city, now a World Heritage Site, is an essential stop on any route through southern Italy.
Herculaneum, like its neighbor Pompeii, was the subject of the volcanic eruption that in 79 AD devastated much of the Campania region.
It is worth highlighting the good state of conservation in which most of the buildings that were part of the city are located, among which you cannot miss the gym, the thermal baths or the public buildings.
4. Vesuvius
This feared volcano, which killed thousands of people, is also one of the most beautiful points in the region and of course, we cannot forget it on our route through Italy.
The ascent, which is short because municipal or private buses travel much of the way, is steep and will undoubtedly make you suffer a little. This climb is not recommended for people with a delicate medical condition, or in periods of extreme temperatures.
The entrance costs ten euros, and on the way up to the crater we will find two stops with cool drinks and souvenirs.
And although the climb will leave you breathless, the wonderful sensation of contemplating the interior of a volcano, or seeing beautiful Naples from the highest point, will make the effort worth it.
5. Annunciata Tower
In Torre Annunciata you will find a small Italian coastal town dominated by the image of the exuberant Vesuvius, which stands practically next to the beautiful town.
Its port populated with small boats that have just arrived from the sea, and its multicolored buildings will take your breath away and force you to enter its small old town in search of the unique details that make this town an essential stop on our route.
6. Pompeii
This jewel of Italian culture could not be missing from our list of essentials on a route through Italy. The visit to Pompeii, which like its neighbor Herculaneum, was devastated by the virulence of the lava poured by Vesuvius in 79 AD, has a surprise factor. For us the biggest surprise is that none of the many photographs that we had seen before entering do justice to such a majestic city.
The state of conservation of most of the homes, and of some of the frescoes in the main buildings, is so good that at times it is possible to imagine walking through its streets when they were still bustling with emotion and life.
While it is true that there are many tourists at any time of the year, if we start the visit first thing in the morning it is easier to avoid the crowds.
7. Castelmare di Stabia
Once we leave behind the magnanimous ruins of the cities that reigned in the past in the Campania region, it is time to enter the Amalfi coast.
And for this, what better than resting on the white beaches of Castelmare di Stabia. This typical Italian city has a medieval castle that seems almost straight out of a story, a dream ice cream parlor, and a natural environment that you will fall in love with at first sight, and it can be an ideal option if you want to include a trekking route during your trip.
8. Vito Equense
This small town built on endless cliffs will leave you speechless, and apart from its natural beauty, it has some of the most spectacular hotels in Amalfi.
And if you don't believe us, all you have to do is take a look at the Mega Mare hotel pool, with views so beautiful that it looks like a viewpoint; or to the Antico Bagno Stabilimento Balneare restaurant, where you can almost touch the water while you regain your strength.
9. Amalfi lemon trees
Along the entire way along the Amalfi coast you will find lemon groves. Stop and take a look at them, because they are a delight for the senses. You will be able to see the enormous lemons, whose designation of origin is one of the most famous in Italy, in different states of ripeness.
10. Sorrento Beach
Once you arrive in paradise, in this case, Sorrento, you will want to walk tirelessly through the streets of its charming old town, have a coffee, or buy one of the inimitable bottles of limoncello sold in almost every establishment in the city and that cannot be missed as a souvenir of your route through Italy.
