1. Chapel of Bones
Although it is one of the most famous locations to see in Évora, we point out that it is not a place suitable for the squeamish. This 16th century chapel is decorated entirely by human bone remains.
The original idea of the monks who carried out this project was to raise human awareness about the unimportance of material goods.
2. Viewpoint of the Chapel of Bones museum
The ticket to visit the Chapel of Bones includes a visit to the annexed museum of sacred art.
The museum has two floors. In the first, you will find various paintings and sculptures with religious themes.
On the second floor an exhibition of “Nativity scenes of the world” awaits you, and a beautiful viewpoint from which you can contemplate the city, and obtain a beautiful view of the Cathedral of Santa Ana.
3. Roman temple
It is one of the main emblems of the city of Évora, and you certainly cannot miss visiting it.
The ruins of this beautiful Roman temple, dedicated to the goddess Diana, rise along the Conde de Vila Flor, in the historic center of the city, and attract the gaze of everyone who passes by.
4. Diana Garden Viewpoint
Next to the 1st century Roman temple, we find a cheerful garden, with one of the most impressive viewpoints to see in Évora.
5. Cathedral of Saint Anne
The Cathedral of Santa Ana, or Sé de Évora, is an imposing construction that combines Romanesque and Gothic, and this makes it a peculiar building, and of spectacular beauty.
And if the exterior is beautiful... what can we say about the interior! Its Gothic cloister, with its compact appearance, seems to transport us to another era.
6. Giraldo Square
It is the main square of the city, which we can reach from practically any street in the center.
And apart from being a perfect place to rest, while we drink a Super Bock, among the arches that surround the square we find the bookstore that we recommend in the next point.
7. Livraria Nazareth
A bookstore open since 1897, in the heart of Giraldo Square, where the smell of ink invades anyone who passes through the door.
One of those magical shops, where we can find much more than books, and the curious details they sell are a beautiful souvenir to take with us from the city.
8. Évora Public Garden
We discovered it by chance, and we were fascinated. This corner of the city remains green even in summer, and within its walls we find benches covered in typical Portuguese tiles, a charming kiosk, its famous fake ruins, and even a funny garden created by the local children.
9. Fake Ruins
These ruins, which we find inside the public garden, are created from architectural remains of different monuments in the city.
Also, if you are lucky, you may find the peacocks that live in the park at the top of the stairs.
10. Walls
It is an irresistible attraction, it is the first thing to see in Évora, and you will enjoy it throughout your visit to the city, because its length of more than two kilometers allows us not to lose sight of it at any time.
11. Cobblestone streets
The streets of this city are a clear reflection of its Alentejo identity. In the historic center we find streets populated with houses of various heights, painted in cheerful shades of snow and yellow, and paved with attractive stone that invite you to walk on them.
12. Prata Water Aqueduct
In our case, this aqueduct welcomed us to the city, since it was the first thing we saw as we arrived.
If this is not your case, you can take a quiet walk to admire the magnificence of this construction inaugurated in 1537.
