5 CHARMING TOWNS IN BURGOS

Any time of year is good to visit the wonders that Burgos hides, but if you decide on autumn, the experience can be sublime. The trees full of branches that change their color, the carpet of leaves that cover the ground, the inspiring smell of the fires that burn in many houses,... All of this makes this weekend excursion a delight for the senses. The route includes 5 towns full of charm, as we show you below:

1.Mahamud

It has a sonorous name that invites you to imagine distant lands. However, this jewel of just over a hundred inhabitants belongs to the province of Burgos. 

The entrance to the town is determined by the Cardinal Cisneros arch. A splendid door that only enunciates the wonders that are hidden once you pass through it. Well, continuing through its narrow streets populated with low houses, we end up in the Plaza Mayor, where the traditional roll and the church of San Miguel await us.

This church (whose construction began in the 14th century) has a splendid interior, and an exterior in which several architectural styles are combined.

And although this is the main attraction of Mahamud, if we continue along Calle Mayor, we will reach another of the entrance doors to the Burgos town.

2. Lerma

Lerma deserves to be visited, not only because it is one of the most beautiful towns in Burgos, but because every time you see it in the distance, while driving, you see it standing there; with its proud Collegiate Church of San Pedro and its Doge's Palace, and you can't help but wonder about the history that is hidden behind those walls.

During our excursion we felt transported to 16th century Spain, and to the actions of the Duke of Lerma.

We opted (very wisely) to take the "baroque walk", a guided route through the Interpretation Center, the ducal passageway and the Collegiate Church that not only taught us the history of the Burgos town, but also took us fully into the life of the court of the Spain of Philip III.

And we finished the visit by tasting some Vulcano chocolates that we purchased at the Clarisas pastry shop (Plaza de Santa Clara) and walking through the Arcos viewpoint, which left us with a picture as beautiful as the one that appears in the photo.

3. Covarrubias

And although we left Lerma thinking that we could no longer be surprised, when we arrived in Covarrubias, we were excited again.

We left the car on the outskirts so we could cross the famous bridge that gives access to the town, and it did not disappoint us. He was running loaded with leaves that had fallen off the trees that flank him, while a few ducks swam calmly.

And after a short walk through its cobbled streets, we arrived at the tower of Doña Urraca, about which more than one legend circulates around, and which can currently be visited.

And almost next door, while we contemplated its typical houses, we found the Collegiate Church of San Cosme and San Damián, a wonderful work of art dating from the 15th century, located in the Plaza del Rey Chindasvinto.

4. Santo Domingo de Silos

This town in the province of Burgos is picturesque. It has cobbled streets, hordes of visitors, and a beautiful panoramic view that we can enjoy if we are able to climb the hill that rises a few meters from the famous monastery.

And obviously, we couldn't miss visiting the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos. Because it is not only advisable, it is mandatory for every art lover. There is no photo that describes the impression it causes, even so we leave you a couple of them so that you whet your appetite.

5. Peñaranda de Duero

Our last stop on the road, and one of the most special. As we headed towards the castle, we couldn't see it, the road didn't allow us to guess the destination we were heading towards. It appeared almost suddenly, and left us with our mouths open.

Its construction began in the 11th century, and its magnitude and level of conservation impress the visitor.

And apart from its attractiveness, it allows you to contemplate the wonders that Peñaranda de Duero hides.

Its Avellaneda Palace, its former Santa Ana collegiate church, its Monastery, and its dreamlike streets, are well worth a visit.

And if you still need one more reason to visit the province of Burgos...

6. La Yecla Gorge

Between Santo Domingo de Silos and Covarrubias we find this gorge, which with its barely half a kilometer length allows us to walk between cavernous walls that narrow until they almost devour the path and distance us from the world.

This gorge is one of the largest vulture reserves in Spain, so with a little luck, and a few minutes of calm observation, you will be able to see these beautiful animals located among the highest rocks.
