Travel without unforeseen events Today we bring you our latest adventure, a three-day route through Soria touring the province. It was a trip that we really wanted to take, since we had to cancel it in 2020, and the time finally came to enjoy the spectacular nature, monumentality and gastronomy of Soria.
Although we already told you that we are looking forward to much more, and that we are already planning our return, we leave you the route we took on this occasion:
Route through Soria Day 1
Riaza
We know that Riaza is not in Soria, but taking into account that we were leaving Madrid, and that it was quite close at hand, we decided to make a stop and explore its streets.
Riaza is a town located in the Sierra de Ayllón, very picturesque, and perfect for food lovers, since a few restaurants that offer delicious options congregate in its Plaza Mayor.
If like us, you only want to visit the town, we recommend that you go to the already named Plaza Mayor, which will surprise you with its originality, and that you do not stop admiring the houses that we find under its arcades, representative of traditional architecture.
Saint Stephen of Gormaz
Our second stop of the day, a beautiful town in the province of Soria that left us so fascinated that we even forgot to immortalize it in our cameras. It is a town steeped in history, and of course, it can be seen in its streets, since even today, you can find vestiges of everything that has happened over the years.
You cannot miss visiting its Romanesque church of San Miguel, a very peculiar, perfectly preserved 11th century jewel, its castle and if you have time, we recommend visiting the Romanesque park that is located in the same town.
Montenegro by Cameros
After the two previous stops, and fascinated by the incredible views we found from the car, we arrived at our destination for the day: Montenegro de Cameros, a small mountain town that borders La Rioja.
Once in the town, we easily found our accommodation, La Almazuela, and after a warm welcome from the owners, we decided to go out to see the place that was going to be our home for the next two days. We found a small town, but full of charm, where the only sounds that break the Soria afternoon are the bleating of the goats and the singing of the swallows.
In the highest area, stands the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, and although the climb is hard, we assure you that it is worth reaching its door. From there, we descended its steep slopes to find various surprises, such as some abandoned schools that still retain all the charm of the places that were once full of life, and a small “house” where the exchange of books is encouraged.
And after this visit, and hungry, we headed to the next town, already corresponding to La Rioja, and where we were able to try various dishes, among others, the long-awaited torreznos that we were already afraid of not finding having changed Autonomous Community.
Route through Soria Day 2
Black Lagoon
One of the main attractions of this trip was to visit the Black Lagoon; and it certainly did not disappoint us.
Getting to the Lagoon is very simple, since we find two parking lots to leave the car, one right next door, less than a hundred meters away, at a cost of four euros per vehicle, and another a little further away, which is about two kilometers from the Black Lagoon.
In our case, we chose to leave the car in this parking lot, and cover the distance to the Lagoon walking along the forest path, which, in addition to being perfectly indicated, is perfect for walking in the spring and autumn seasons.
Once in the Lagoon, we walked along the wooden walkway where we can find various viewpoints, and we took the opportunity to contemplate the incredible beauty of the place.
Urbion Peak
From Laguna Negra, and taking advantage of the trail, we decided to continue our route to Pico Urbión. The route is not excessively long, it is about 4 kilometers from the Laguna Negra (one way), but it does have certain areas of steep slopes, which can be a challenge for the less experienced.
Even so, and despite the effort, if your physical condition allows it, we recommend that you do not miss this wonder. Firstly, and after a steep climb, you will reach a viewpoint from which you can see the entire Black Lagoon, and where you can admire the true dimension of this natural wonder.
If after the viewpoint you decide to continue the path, you will realize that the path is less demanding, and takes you to Laguna Larga; Much less known than the Black Lagoon, but equally incredible.
And although after Laguna Larga the path becomes a little complicated again, don't give up, the top is very close! The views from the peak are spectacular, so we encourage you to reach the top.
Castroviejo
After returning to the car, after traveling the road in reverse again, we decided to head towards Castroviejo.
Castroviejo is a charming place very close to Duruelo (about thirteen kilometers), where you can see spectacular rock formations, which have given rise to the most whimsical shapes.
Castroviejo can be explored, following the short guide proposed upon arrival; and you can also admire it from the viewpoint that has been placed on one of the most impressive rocks. We assure you that the view is absolutely incredible.
Revenga Community Member
Our next stop on this route that was leaving us more and more fascinated, was Comunero de Revenga. A small town where you can see a spectacular Visigothic necropolis; and although it is true that several burials of the same type can be found in the area, what caught our attention the most about this necropolis was its large size; since more than one hundred graves have been counted.
But in addition, Comunero de Revenga has another attraction, and this is the wood museum, which explains the process of obtaining this natural resource, which is the main source of wealth for the entire region.
It is a curious museum, located in a quite striking building, and which has a viewpoint where we can get a good view of the entire area.
Vinuesa
It was our last stop of the day, and it was certainly worth adding to our route through Soria. A small town, but full of attraction, where we could enjoy a pleasant walk through its cobbled streets, we enjoyed a coffee in one of its many bars, and we were able to see its Gothic style church, and its stone houses, in which we highlight the coats of arms that decorate many of its facades, and that speak to us of a stately past in the town of Vinuesa.
Route through Soria Day 3
Cuerda del Pozo Reservoir
Our stop here was improvised, we were attracted by the enormous expanse of water that makes up the Cuerda Del Pozo reservoir, and we did not stop until we found a viewpoint where we could stop to marvel at the perfect silence of the Soria morning, which It was only interrupted by the happy song of a cuckoo, located in a nearby tree.
As seen in the photo, in the Cuerda Del Pozo reservoir you can see the vestiges of a previous era; And the bell tower that crowned the town's church emerges from the water, which was submerged under the water after its construction.
Numancia
Our second stop of the day was in Numancia. Surely you have heard about this ancient city, and the many myths and legends that have been written around it, well, we wanted to know it.
We chose to visit the site on an extensive two-hour guided tour (which costs six euros per person), and we immersed ourselves in the Numantine wars, in the history of that proud city that has inspired so many legends, and we were also able to see a little better than life was before and after the Roman conquest. And at the Numancia site it is possible to visit the recreated houses of farmers and ranchers from pre-Roman times, and even get an idea of what life was like for the most privileged in Roman times.
Soria
Lastly, and as it could not be less, we finished our route through Soria with a stop in the capital of Soria. We walked along the Duero promenade, enjoying the spring, and we reached the doors of the impressive hermitage of San Saturio (which at the time we arrived was closed, but you can visit it inside, and it is highly recommended to do so), we visited the Co-Cathedral, the Church of San Juan de Rabanera; and of course, we stopped in the Plaza de San Clemente to enjoy the delicious Soria tapas, which we also recommend not to miss.
